AH! What a feeling !!!!
I just bought PCMaster only to find out that Alkis job, gave us some excellent results!
The 4 pages review is the first (i think) that gives KO2002 a better score than the one it gave Fiffa2002, a couple of months ago! KO2002 with 90%, kicks down from the first place, the cursed opponent with its 88%!!! Yeeeha!
Also it's the first review in the long time history of the magazine, that is written by two reviewers!!!
I'll give you a translation of the article tomorrow.
The thing is that it's not like any other review i've ever read in this magazine. It doesn't actually talk about the game using topics like gfx,sound etc. but it gives you just a general idea. It's like a review by two gamers that had just played a couple of games against each other!!
" I'll just give you their positives and the negatives.

Positives.
+ Fast? Yes
Rough? No!
+ Ultimate arcade sensation
+ A "true" kick off classic
+ The ULTIMATE two players game!

Negatives
- Tough gameplay
- Unreal teams,leagues,players etc.

And as for the score:
Gfx= 70%
Sound= 70%
Gameplay= 94%
Durability (through time) = 90%
Total= 90%

Special note: You are still here? "

So what do you think! We just had a victory or what?!
At the last line of the review they let out something like a wish..."Lets see it in the Grand Prix!"... The Grand Prix is a tournament the magazine is organizing every year with 2-3 games were lots of people compete in games like F^^^a or Quake etc. That gave me a very exciting idea.
I don't know why Alkis haven't thought of it (or if he did then what was the thing that turned him down). If they could insert KO2002 in their tourney then why not sponsoring an extra *special* tourney of KO2??????? (during the 3day grand prix!) And with people all around the world entering the competition it would be great for them? I know they won't propable pay for the hotel but still they'll have more ideas in how to organize this thing...
I'll e-mail them and see what happens.

As a response to Antonis' question: Compupress have completely rejected the possibility of sponsoring a Kick Off 2 tournament.
I bought the magazine yesterday. The cover had KO02 included in a list of reviews. Unfortunately, it didn't make it as the main cover theme (Dungeon Siege did). I opened the magazine with trembling hands.. They had given FIFA 2002 88%, so I was hoping for at least 80-85. Imagine my delight when I saw a big round 90! This will definetely boost the sales in Greece! Even though it is sold at 30.9EU, 80% more expensive than the English version.
The review is 4 pages long, and it includes plenty of screenshots, even a slide-by-slide description of one replay I have uploaded at our site (the defensive attempt).
There is also a picture of a CMS joystick (what you know as Greek joystick), with a short description of the basic moves. Caption: "The Zidane of controllers! Find an old fashioned joystick with a large base and a round short stick. It costs about 15EU and it will free your..legs!". Our site is also mentioned under "Fan sites".
It's written by two reviewers, not one, because they both wanted to write about the game and they couldn't decide! The first one is very enthusiastic and has nothing but good things to say, the other one is a bit unfair.
Here it is:

------
THE KING OF SOCCER SIMS IS BACK!

It's been 12 years yet it seems like yesterday!
What is Kick Off 2002 and why is there so much noise about its name? Kick Off 2 was the best football game for many years during the last decade. It set an example for the games of that era. The recipe was based on simple yet functional features. Simplistic 2D graphics, a top down view, with a scanner that pictured dots as the positions of the players on the field. Huge speed, with the little sprites running in panic up and down (the attackers in particular accelerated very fast), simple but difficult control, which did not allow dribbles and faking like FIFA does, and a whole bunch of ways of scoring a goal (mid-line shot, aftertouch, lob, foul kick, corner kick, header, overhead kick, ball trapping and more). The most important part about the game was that the players had to use their imagination in order to score. Situations similar to FIFA 2002, where a player is dribbling the ball for ages outside the box, waiting for a chance to shoot from a predetermined spot, did not apply in KO2. Everything happened very fast, so as a result it featured more chances than any other football game, in any platform in the history of video games!
For those of you who are wondering why I'm talking about Kick Off 2 and not Kick Off 2002, it's because I want to prepare the ground: Kick Off 2002 is exactly as good, as addictive and as pleasant as the Amiga Kick Off 2! The basic features are entirely transfered from the popular home edition, and they are enriched with today's visual and sound effects. Although the graphics are in full 3D, they do not ruin the 2D feeling of the game! What's missing from the game is the official championships (Champion's League, national etc.), and the official teams & names. You see, they didn't have the copyright to do that, however you can find the real championships at the Kick Off Gathering site, made by the fans!
/*switch*/
Having played about 10 matches and being influenced by the game, I can claim (with a small reserve) that Kick Off 2002 is true Kick Off. You will find most of the good old tricks! The decisive aftertouch, the chip shot, the headers, the tacklings, the lobs and the goals, even the most popular goal tactics functioned almost perfectly, giving me a weird feeling of deja vu.
/*switch*/
The basic feature is the control, where everything happens with the stick movement and the press of a single button! When the player has possesion of the ball, it is not glued to his feet. He pushes it forward towards the direction he desires. By a single press of the button, the player shoots or makes a long pass. If the stick is turned left or right right after the press, the ball will curl (the infamous aftertouch). If it is turned opposite to the player's movement, the ball will gain height.
/*switch*/
The game is somewhat slower than Kick Off 2, however it's still faster than anything we have seen in the PCs till now (there are 3 speed options for those who can't run too fast). In addition, strangely there is no single game option, there is Exhibition instead. In Exhibition having two equal teams is not possible (as only national teams are included), something that was possible in Single Game. Furthermore, the players get too tired by the end of the game and move too slowly, which is another problem.
/*switch*/
If you belong to those people who started playing football games in PC, then you're in trouble, cause this game is hard. You can't learn how to play in an hour, you will keep losing the ball at first. Naturally, you must forget playing with a joypad or any other modern controller. Thank God for Alkis Polyrakis who gave me the appropriate joystick so I can enjoy the game! Sure you can use the keyboard, but there is no key for crossing, passing, tieing your laces. Nothing is automatic, everything depends on the player's dexterity! There are different control options, so it would be best to try the easiest at first, in which the ball does not leave the feet so easily.
/*switch*/
Those of you who like their games to be realistic should know that Kick Off was never a realistic game. Some people referred to it as "soccer-pinball", due to the unrealistic way the players behave and score. I don't know if you will like Kick Off 2002, especially the younger players who haven't seen the old version. The "old" ones are expected to get it whatever we write.
/*switch*/
Kick Off 2002 is a game for everyone. It is, after 12 years, the ultimate soccer game and is expected to attract the original KickOffers away from their Amigas & STs! As for the young ones, those who are obsessed with FIFA may not like it, because of its difficulty. Those of you who decide to give it a good try, you will adore it!

Excellent I agree about the " the players gets to tired at the end of the game" though. This was the first thing I mentioned for Steve, and the thing I most of all wanted to be adjusted. Unfortunately for me, not everyone agreed! I still think the players should run much much faster in the 2. half then they are doing now. Why can't the players run like they did in the 1. half? At least nearly as fast. This would be way more realistic.

Great work Alkis

Even so, this particular reviewer was a bit harsh, and he only played 10 games. "In Exhibition having two equal teams is not possible", what's he talking about? Who's stopping him from choosing Greece Vs Greece for instance? And "Those of you who like their games to be realistic should know that Kick Off was never a realistic game"? Oh yeah, the other football games are sooo realistic with the ball glued to the the player's feet! I think that if it hadn't been for him, the score would be 95%. It's still a hell of a good review though.

" KICK OFF 02
THE KING OF THE SOCCER SIMS IS BACK!

reviewers: Haris Kladis & Dimitris Ioannidis
category: simulation
requirements: P233, 63Mb ram,8mb 3d gfx card.
game difficulty: medium

First day of the year and the "war" in the magazine offices, were on fire! Toulias (he is another reviewer of the magazine) may have give up but a new contender show up. Ladies and gentlemen PCMaster welcomes you in the first partnership review of all times!

12 years already passed and it just looks like it's been yesterday! Isn't it? My fellow competitor (Dimitris) had no reason not to agree... Even our editor would agree -although when i stepped into his office to ask him to write a second opinion about Kick Off 2002, he replied that he would glad to do it if he had an Amiga and a pacman joystick...

Kick Off...
What's Kick off and why we talk so much about it? Kick Off was the best soccer game for many many years over the last decade. It has been an example for other games to follow. Its recipient was based on simple and handy characteristics. Little gfx, in 2d mode, give the player a top-down view, using also a small radar of the field where he could see in dots the 22 players. Full speed, and the sprites of the players, run-like crazy- up and down (especially the strikers had an incredible pace), simple but at the same time difficult gameplay, that didn't let the player dribble the ball in Fifa series style, and an incredible amount of ways, to score a goal (from the center of the field, using after-touch, with a long shot, with a free-kick, with a header, scissor-kick, step over the ball, etc). An important fact in the game was ,although you could score some goals all over again, the players had to use their creativity and imagination, to make it through situations, where scoring a goal was anything but close! There are no situations like in Fifa 2002 (like those that I also saw in the Grand Prix of our magazine) where the ball is played just out of one player territory for a long time, with the attacker dribble the ball in order to get a chance to shoot, from the same spot. In KO2 everything happened so quick, us a result the game became the game with the more goal situations than any other, in any other console, in all the video games history!

Kladis moves from the right, passes the ball…
For those that ask why I –all the time- refer to KO2 and not KO02, I have to prepare them. KO02 isn’t that good, that habit-forming, and so pleasant as the one in Amiga!
The basic characteristics are here, and with gfx of the modern technology. Of course that happens without spoiling the image of the game. The graphics although they are 3D , do not spoil the 2D sensation of the game!
Before I give a pass to Dimitri, with the first look what you won’t find in the game is the official leagues (champions’ league, national leagues), the names of the players and the teams of FIFA, you see there were no rights! Still in the box with the fan sites you’ll find the address of KO Gathering were you’ll find those leagues, made by the fans of the game!

…to Ioannidis, who begins a long-run…
Having already played 10 games and while I am still affected by the game, I may say (with little reservation) that KO02 is a real KO02. You’ll find, all the old, good tricks! The important “After Touch” , the long shot goals, the air headers, the tackles, even the famous ways of scoring worked (almost) perfect, giving us a new and strange sensation of deja vu.

…and sets the ball to Kladis, who had stepped up…
The basic element is the gameplay, where moving the stick and pressing one button do everything! When the player has the ball, it doesn’t stick in his legs. He moves it by pushing it in the direction he desires. A simple ‘tap’ of the button makes the player shoot or do a long pass. If the stick is moved right or left the ball takes an after touch. If it is moved in the opposite direction (of the one the player is moving) then the ball will gain height as much as harsh as will the turn of the stick, be!

…1 2 with Ioannidis inside the penalty area…
The game is a little bit slower from KO2, but still it’s the faster game we ever saw in the PC’s until now (it has 3 levels of speed for those that cannot run much!) . Also single player mode is missing, which is replaced by exhibition. In exhibition it’s not possible to have two equal opponent teams (because only national teams are used), which was able to happen in single game. Also when a match is about to end the players start to get tired, and so moving slower, which is very irritating and an important disadvantage.

…Kladis…
Now if you are one of those that started playing soccer games in PC’s, then you are in trouble, because the game is tough. You can’t learn it within an hour, your first experiences will be some wrong passes and lost balls. Of course forget playing the game with a joypad or any other modern joystick. I bless Alkis Polurakis for bringing the appropriate joystick (see photo) in order for us to enjoy the game.Of course you may use the keyboard, but there is no button for long balls, a button for passes, a button for a player to tie his shoes (borrowed by the famous advert). Nothing happens automatically, everything depends on your abilities. There are different levels of gameplay, as I have already said, and I suggest if you play it for the first time, to set it to the lowest level, where the ball stick to the players leg, more.

…to Ioannidis…
For those that like realistic football games, they must know that KO was never a realistic game. It’s been even called “soccer-pinball” because of the unrealistic way the players act and score. I don’t know if KO02 will be liked, especially in new players who haven’t seen the old version. The “old” gamers are expected to see it whatever we write about it (stubborn!)

…and GOAL! (Celebrations and stuff!)
Kick off 2002 is a game for everybody! It’s, after 12 years, the ultimate arcade soccer game and it’s expected to get all the old Kick Off players back together – it might get them away from their Amiga’s and ST’s! About the newbies, and those that are stuck with Fifa series, they might not like it, especially because of its tough gameplay. Still all those that will play its heart out they will love it! Lets see it in the Grand Prix! ”

There are also some boxes inside the review. One is talking about the joystick movements another one is showing a bug.
Also there is one saying:
If you like it then load Steem or WinFellow and enjoy KO2 on ST or Amiga!”
Another one says:
Did you know that the version of KO2 for PC’s in 1990 was the worst of all computers at that time (even worst than the one on spectrum!). Someone can say that it took 12 years in order to get the gameplay right in the PC’s!”

I had no access to a scanner, so no pics of the article can be posted.

PHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

NOW MY LOYAL TERMINATOR T1000 AND MY 1000000000000 ZERGLINGS, ATTACK ALKIS!!! CHAAAAAAAARGE!

Interesting detail: the editor of the magazine _also_ likes/remembers the pacman joysticks.

heh heh laces indeedy...nice one Alkis, you are right one does seem to be a bit harsh about it being like pinball (I never thought that, to me it is like real football and other games are far more arcadey! speed doesn't make it arcadey!)
