Amiga on modern monitors...how to ?

Postby Pietro » Mon Nov 14, 2022 11:08 am

Hello,
I bought my Amiga 500 in 1988 along with a Philips monitor (model CM 8833). The Amiga 500 still works fine (even though I had to change internal disk drive in 2021) but monitor looks like to be on its way out.
After 35 years, it makes no sense trying to recover an old monitor on the decline, too expensive. I have 2 options:
[1] recover a 14"-15" TV 4:3 with SCART connector.
[2] use modern monitors (HD/full HD) with an HD video converter/upscaler.

The first option is easier: no think, just buy and substitute monitor but TV works as far as it goes.
The second option is the best one for the future but upscaler market is really unknown for me. I think many people had the same problem in the past. Do exist any "not so expensive" converter/upscalers with decent quality ? I found online many models, all with impractical prices, I cannot spend 200€ for a video upscaler...moreover, someone says that basic upscalers work well only with some applications (like Workbench or Deluxe Paint) but not for games like KO2...any ideas ? :?o:

thanks,
Pietro

Don't give up on the 8833 too easily. I've recently repaired two failing amiga monitors without much expense or expert knowledge. Youtube is your friend here!

I have no experience with expensive up scalers, especially anything that uses the amiga monitor port. Buying an old CRT is a good option, but the quality varies a lot. Ideally try before you buy.

Hi,
Avoid upscaler, lcd or oled.
If you are using a real Amiga it’s worth to fix your Philips, believe me. You live near Arcade Story, (check FB for details) they are way competent and they will repair your monitor with a reasonable cost.
Otherwise check subito and look for a Sony trinitron 14” CRT cheap and very good for Amiga through RGB scart cable. Best possible picture.
Avoid modern TV. Old hardware is meant to be used with CRT.
