WTF. Coming 2nd, losing only two games by someone that has almost double the points... only to win 205 points which I'll lose due to inactivity in a few months? And still the 2nd most succesful Greek player is above the most succesful one in the ranings? Whatever happenned to the WC bonus? Whatever happenned to justice?

That's it. I'm moving to Abu Dhabi.

Before moving, I hope to update KOASI as well this weekend.

BTW, Rodolfo's cunning yearly plan seems to pay off. He is comfortably above the 1000 points threshold now.

Fear Leparulo next year!

Above 1000 points for the first time ever! I can't believe it, I seriously never thought I would see the day.

Good question.

The problem is that we don't update the rankings after each match (like Dagh's system intended) but after each tournament. If we updated after each match it would be impossible for someone to go below zero as their losses would be divided by ever smaller amounts. But with 'lag' this is possible.

Andreas won't start on 32 next year, as his 'monthly drift' back to the 1000 base, over 12 months, will pull him in around +110 points by then. From a base of 142 points, Andreas is going to lose only 5 pts or so if a 1000pt player beats him, or 10 pts if a 500pt player beats him. I think it's unlikely that he'll go below zero, unless he loses 15+ games to low ranked players all in the same month, without the rankings having a chance to update. The problem really is the 'fatal' damage coming all in one hit, before his initial ranking can be reduced further.

About whether the formula would work, not exactly in its current form. At the moment, you exchange a base 25 pts for beating someone. If a 1000pt player beats a 50pt player, it becomes a gain/loss of 50/1000 so 1.25points are exchanged. With a player on a negative ranking, like -50, this current formula would make Andreas gain 1.25pts for losing(!)

I think the best solution is to say that:

1) A player cannot start a tournament with fewer than 1 ranking points
2) If, after a tournament, a player ends with negative ranking points, we need to assess the level of the damage.
a) If they are just below zero, we may decide not to intervene. A player on -10 points will gain 10.1 points in 'drift' in the next month's rankings.
b) If they are way below zero, for example -300 (which I think is extremely unlikely) then we will have to intervene into the rankings and reset their ranking to 1 points. This would be done by a flat 'tax' of 1 point on all of the 300 other players in the rankings. Numbers used are illustrative, not precise.

I think that scenario a) is unlikely, and scenario b) is very unlikely. But it's good to plan ahead.

Alkis, if the activities of Andreas or any other player means that they would BEGIN A NEW MONTH with negative points, then let me know in advance, as we need to implement a solution.

Nice work Alkis and Spryos. Enjoyed The Lob as usual, with those very impressive WC stats by Gianni. 8)
