Simon, you are intelligent, educated and well-informed enough to understand that this was principally an ETHNIC and POLITCAL conflict. The doctrines of the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches are virtually identical and they have co-existed peacefully in the rest of Ireland and the UK since Tudor times. No-one is fighting over this, or feels any need to.

Since you know this very well, the fact that you try to portray this ethnic and political conflict as a religious one is an excellent example of atheism taking a cheap shot at religion. Thank you for providing this - it's exactly what I wanted to highlight.

About the fussing, there are maybe 2 sides, but please note the differences: some say adopt my point of view or you are stupid, and how is it that you are allowed to vote? while others are defending liberty and basic human rights for everyone, even for the ungrateful like you

It also does not prevent me from highlighting the many flaws in all religions.. but I would never say.. "You are totally stupid if you are Christian or Muslim.. ".. but I could say.. "Christian religion is stupid because the bible says "homosexuality is wrong" yet the church allows "homosexual priests" ...

I certainly would have loved to have met and hung out with Jesus when he was on Earth. He is definately more interesting than Elvis.

I find atheists (or should that be Dawkinsists now, as he is their prophet) can be quite an arrogant bunch. If atheists could prove successfully that there is not a God, then they would have a better platform.

Atheists can't prove successfully that there is no god, just as bleievers can't prove there is one. Even Dawkins doesn't say, there definitely isn't a god. All he says is that evidence stongly suggests that there probably isn't one. I personally find people that say there is no god and believers are stupid, to be as annoying as those that say there definitely is a god and non-believers are going to burn in hell/not go to heaven/cease to exist, or whatever.

This is the big problem I have. If there is a god and he created everything, then he's a pretty awesome being. One who's word should be regarded to the letter, without question. So for any religion to update their beliefs because they need to fit better with modern society just invalidates that whole belief system in my mind. If there is a god, who are men to change what was supposedly written under guidance from his spirit? It's nonsense. Either the bible is the holy word of god or it's not.

I do not how is it in the Church of England, but there is no necessity of believing in the Bible for us the catholics. The Bible (specially the Old Testament and the Revelation) is an old collection of stories of mostly simbolic meaning. We do not need to read that as the articles of the Constitution, it is simply not for that. Christian philosophers and saints have added a lot to that. We (for the benefit of All) had Aquinas, Ockham, Francis of Assisi, Chesterton... In a personal note, too many and too brilliant not to feel intellectually comfortable and proud about my faith.

See my previous response and that of Rodolfo; the bible is a work of humans and, since it's historical document, reflects contemporaneous views and norms. Have you ever read the old testament? It's madness. There are many sections there which are surely embarrassing for the church now. But the christian church no longer advocates (for example) stoning women for adultery and more than it advocates burning of heretics. What to do? Rewrite the bible? If they did that, they would only be accused of devaluing and corrupting a sacred text and thereby making the whole thing worthless. You can't win. So, there is no airbrushing out of these offending passages, and they continue to jarr. But really, taking cheap shots at them is just, well, cheap and ignorant. Change the record, atheists!

Robert, I fail to see how you can accuse Atheists of being cheap and ignorant regarding their "taking apart" of the bible.. when the Christian church itself had to divide into two following the inability to agree on wether its OK to be gay.. if you are Christian. All of this was caused by the words in the bible... so they must be fecked up if even believers cant accept them anymore.
